Anderson, Davis fined for illegal hits

Panthers linebackers Thomas Davis and James Anderson were both fined for hits in last Sunday's 27-21 overtime loss to the Buccaneers.

Davis was fined $21,000 for hitting a defenseless receiver, Tiquan Underwood, in the head at the end of regulation. Anderson was fined $10,000 for delivering a blow to the head of quarterback Josh Freeman as he slid to the ground.

Both players plan to appeal the fines.

Williams gets nod at right guard at Eagles

Ron Rivera said the Panthers will start Garry Williams at right guard in Monday's primetime game against the Eagles, according to the Charlotte Observer. Williams will replace Jeff Byers, who has struggled in four starts at the position.

Since Byers was inserted into the starting lineup, Cam Newton has been sacked 11 times – seven coming against the Broncos in Week 10.

McDermott faces ex-team

Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will be in familiar territory on Monday night. McDermott, who joined the team last season, grew up in Philadelphia and spent more than a decade on the Eagles coaching staff.

After joining the team as a scouting administrative coordinator in 1999, McDermott worked in an number of roles before being named interim defensive coordinator in May 2009. He was promoted to the full-time position less than two months later, but was heavily criticized after the Eagles defense struggled during the 2010 season.

McDermott was fired by head coach Andy Reid on January 15, 2011.

Two days later, the Panthers hired McDermott as defensive coordinator.

Despite the less-than-graceful end to his 12-year stint in Philly, McDermott says he holds no ill-will toward Reid or the Eagles organization. He also insists that Monday night's game is a team battle – not a personal one.

“Andy’s a heck of a coach. He’s got a great staff. They do a great job, all the way from the head coach to the trainers,” McDermott told the Charlotte Observer. “What I’m focused on, and what we have to be focused on, is Philadelphia. It’s not Sean McDermott versus the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s the Carolina Panthers versus the Philadelphia Eagles.”
