The Carolina Panthers signed long snapper J.J. Jansen and backup linebacker Jason Phillips to contracts on Wednesday.

Jansen, the Carolina long snapper since 2009, was signed to a four-year extension. When it comes to NFL long snappers, usually no news is good news. Jansen, undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2008, has been the epitome of reliable at the position. With the exception of one slip-up against the New York Giants in the 2010 season opener, the 26-year-old has been flawless.

The Panthers also signed backup linebacker Jason Phillips to a one-year deal. Phillips spent the majority of the 2011 season on injured reserve. The former fifth-round pick in 2009 played in four games and recorded three tackles before being sidelined with a calf injury.

This leaves the team with 11 unrestricted free agents in 2012, including five starters from 2011 – tight end Jeremy Shockey, guard Geoff Hangartner, wide receiver Legedu Naanee and linebackers Dan Connor and Jordan Senn. Of these players, Jeremy Shockey, perhaps the most important, has already expressed his desire to return to the upstart Panthers next season.

In other news, a bizarre story has surfaced involving a 2004 Carolina Panthers Super Bowl playbook and a garage sale. Panthers fan Matt Rowell, 26, was at a local Charlotte garage sale and stumbled across a Panthers-Patriots playbook from Super Bowl XXXVIII in a bag headed for the dumpster.

Rowell stumbled across a number of other Panthers treasures including former defensive tackler Kris Jenkins' size 16 cleats. He showed off the playbook to his friends and family for about a week before calling the Panthers to return it.

"I enjoyed it for a week. I was like, you know what, this really belongs more to the fans than it does to me or for me selling it, because if I were to sell it on Craigslist or eBay or wherever, then that person  may then sell it to the Falcons or to the Saints," Rowell said. "It's just stuff that you can't, as a die hard fan you just can't do that."
